Switching gears: Drive to Neutral at 40mph. Bad or OK?

I always see my friend switch Drive to Neutral when he goes on this road at 40 mph, which is a little hilly, and he would switch after about 1 mile back from N to D without braking or slowing down at 40mph

You will need to do some more research, but I think I remember that it is illegal to operate a motor vehicle on the road out of gear. You don't have the ability to accelerate as quickly if you have to wait for the transmission to engage to avoid an accident. Bad Joss!!!

bag that Legality crud that guy said ...turn the car off if you really want to save gas ,but it is harsh on engine to start and restart engine often but you cvan seave lots of fuel,if manual "dont" down shift,if auto neutral shift is fine just dont shift to reverse"careful"
Reply:Will not hurt it.

I do it too!
Reply:Well, it can be hard on the transmission for one thing, but it is illegal in some places to coast out of gear. BC in Canada for one, Indiana in the US for another, have laws against it. Commercial vehicles over a certain weight are governed by federal licence laws that prohibit it.

When you are out of gear, you cannot react to any emergency situation that demands quick acceleration or quick controlled manoeuvres.
